Howdy Y'all: I went to a monthly jam last night in Lubbock at the Hillcrest Country Club. Originally, a musician buddy was going to go with me, but that didn't happen so I worked up the courage to go by myself. Usually when I go to a jam, I start out by hiding behind my Beloved or Mike or Bob. So guys, I hope you're proud of me!
There were 2 rooms of pickers, soI went to the room that didn't have a bass. You just DO NOT need 2 bass players in the same jam. There were about 10 musicians in there:2 mandolins, 2 banjos, 2 fiddles, 4 guitars, and me. Everyone was a lot older than I (is 'I' correct here?) so I got treated like the favored child. However, although a good bass player is highly regarded by most, she is also the most overworked one in the bunch! Everyone insists that you play EVERY song, so no potty breaks, no drink breaks, and nobody wants to hear that your arm needs a rest!!
But it was a lot of fun, and I was pleased that I could hold my own among all the veterans.
And oh golly, as soon as they found out I could sing, I was pressed into harmonizing with every song even if I didn't know the words! It was funny: I would basically sing "watermelon" and afterwards, they would compliment me. Hahaha!
I made a lot of friends, I got invited to several of their private jams, and one guy who plays out even said he would call me when he needs a bass player.
So it was worth the drive, and the exhaustion afterwards.
Y'all have a good weekend.
Till next time - The Sparrow
